Probability and Mathematical Statistics: A Series of Monographs and Textbooks: Statistics of Directional Data aims to provide a systematic account of statistical theory and methodology for observations which are directions.

The book then examines fundamental theorems and distribution theory, point estimation, and tests for samples from von. "This book has been written as a drastic revision and major extension to Statistics of Directional Data. It is a worthy successor to that book and will surely become the definitive reference on this subject are for many years." (Short Book Reviews, Vol.

20, No. 3, December ). It is the companion book of the more theoretical treatment presented in Modern Directional Statistics (CRC Press, ). The field of directional statistics has received a lot of attention due to demands from disciplines such as life sciences or machine learning, the availability of massive data sets requiring adapted statistical techniques.

To analyse such data it is necessary to use the techniques of directional statistics, in which the special structure of circles, spheres and rotation groups is taken into account. This book gives a unified and comprehensive account of directional statistics, presenting both the underlying statistical theory and the practical methodology.5/5(1).

(source: Nielsen Book Data) Summary Modern Directional Statistics collects important advances in methodology and theory for directional statistics over the last two decades. It provides a detailed overview and analysis of recent results that can help both researchers and : Ley, Christophe.

Presents new and up-dated material on both the underlying theory and the practical methodology of directional statistics, helping the reader to utilise and develop the techniques appropriate to their work.

The book is divided into three parts. The first part concentrates on statistics on the circle. Topics covered include tests of uniformity, tests of good-of-fit, inference on von Mises. Since usual statistics, such as the arithmetic mean and the standard deviation, do not have this rotational invariance, one must use other statistics. Modern Directional Statistics collects important advances in methodology and theory for directional statistics over the last two decades.

It provides a detailed overview and analysis of recent results that can help both researchers and practitioners.

Knowledge of multivariate statistics eases the reading but is not by: "The book is definitely handy for researchers and graduate students in statistics as well as for scientists and practical users in bioscience, ecological and environmental sciences, social sciences and other applied areas where directional data analysis is needed and even high-dimensional data analytics is Price: $ This book collects important advances in methodology and data analysis for directional statistics.

Statistics of Directional Data By K. MARDIA Leeds University [Read before the ROYAL STATISTICAL SOCIETY at a meeting organized by the RESEARCH SECTION on Wednesday, March 19th,Professor R. PLACKETT in the Chair] SUMMARY Directional data analysis is emerging as an important area of statistics.

Directional Statistics: Introduction Estimators of the concentration parameter 𝜅 of the vMF distribution (4) can be found, for example, in Ducharme and Milasevic [ 25 ] and Ronchetti [ 26 ]. This thesis is an account of some aspects of time series analysis for directional data (or, more strictly, circular data), which is an almost totally unexplored area of statistics.

The thesis is in four chapters. The rst concerns a family of models for directional time series which is naturally derived from the ARMA family of time series models.

The most often used distribution for modelling directional data has been the circular normal (CN) (a.k.a. von-Mises) distribution. Recently Kato and Jones (K–J) introduced a family of Author: Mahesh K.C. Density estimation, as discussed in this book, is the construction of an estimate of the density function from the observed data.

The two main aims of the book are to explain how to estimate a density from a given data set and to explore how density estimates can be used, both in their own right and as an ingredient of other statistical procedures. Although serial data can be analyzed using time series, it can also be examined using directional statistics.

Remember that both time and date data are measured on a circle and can be converted to angular measurements.NETWORK SUMMER Clarity is paramount when determining the structure/layout of your dissertation. In that respect, the thesis-by-chapter format may be advantageous, particularly for students pursuing a PhD in the natural sciences, where the research content of a .To analyse such data it is necessary to use the techniques of directional statistics, in which the special structure of circles, spheres and rotation groups is taken into account.
